Melvin Wevers

Since 2020, I am an Assistant Professor in Digital History at the University of Amsterdam. My research focuses on the application of computational methods to model historical processes. I do this by combining insights from the philosophy of history with the affordances of modeling techniques, such as time series analysis, bayesian statistics, deep/machine learning, and information theory.

Thomas Smits

Thomas Smits

Thomas Smits is an assistant professor of digital history and artificial intelligence at the University of Amsterdam. A historian of visual culture with an interest in digital methodologies, especially multimodal AI techniques, he is author of the prize-winning The European Illustrated Press and the Emergence of a Transnational Visual Culture of the News, 1842-1870 (2020). Recent work focusses on the visual representation of war, (iconic) protest images, and early color photography and was published in New Media and Society, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, Visual Studies, and the Journal of Historical Geography.
